So Many Problems: How to Start Tapping?

  3. Start tapping

What do your think about when you tap? How do you find the right topic?

If you anticipate that the story on your mind is too painful or that you shouldn’t go there by yourself, then trust your instincts, and only tap for thoughts that you feel safe approaching on your own.

If a topic doesn’t come easily to mind, here are some phrases to start with.  As you tap notice what images, memories or thoughts come to mind, and choose one that feels like a tappable issue.

You can stay with any of the phrases below and using your own words, tap on the current feelings and thoughts that come up, or you can continue to tap until you access a memory that reminds you of how your are feeling now.

Start with physical symptoms, or an awareness of your body. Here are some sample phrases:

  • Even though my lower back hurts, I deeply and completely accept myself.
  • Even though my lower back hurts, I deeply and completely accept myself.
  • Even though I am so tired now, I accept myself and my tired feeling.
  • Even though my head feels like it going to start hurting in 2 hours, I am sort of OK now.

 

Tap for emotional symptoms of the moment:
  • Even though I feel annoyed, I am not sure why, and I am OK.
  • Even though I am sad today; something happened, and I am OK.
  • Even though I am worried, I will do what I can and notice where my body feels tense.

 

Now you can do a bit of easy detective work to find an old event. First acknowledge that you are not sure what your are tapping for, and ask yourself a few questions:

  • Even though I wonder why I am sitting here, I am not sure what to tap on, I accept myself.
  • Even though I have lots of problems, what do I want to tap for today?
  • Even though I have this pain or emotion, what does this remind me of?
